Running to Relieve Heel Pain

Wait a second?  Did we say running to relieve heel pain?  This advice may make your thoroughly confused.  Our advice is actually to those who don’t fit regular exercise into their day.  If this describes you, skip ahead to the next paragraph.   For those of you who are regular runners, make an appointment with your Austin podiatrist or visit the Heel Pain Center of Central Texas to learn more about the source of your heel pain. Please DO NOT continue or begin to run with heel pain

The way running can help to relieve heel pain is weight loss. Heel pain is probably the most common malady of the feet.  With the ongoing rise in obesity, it is not difficult to see a connection between the two.  Your foot absorbs up to two or three time your body weight as you take each step! During normal walking each foot and leg must support the entirety of your weight as you step forward.  Small imbalances in your feet can lead to heel pain when your body weight is well over where it should be.

Some of us struggle with maintaining a healthy weight more than others.  Even the best metabolism slows as we age and the pounds can creep up on all of us.  Between work, school, children, meetings, family obligations, and all the other things that make up our lives, it is easy to ignore our own health.  With the holiday’s coming up, it is an especially hard time of the year to watch what we eat. Unfortunately, ignoring heel pain or weight gain often leads to bigger problems.

Taking daily walks and eating smaller portions are simple easy things you can do start the weight loss process.  The best way to continue to maintain a healthy weight is with regular exercise like running.  A great way to avoid foot and heel pains is through maintaining a healthy weight. If you currently suffer from heel pain, visit the Heel Pain Center division of Austin Foot and Ankle Specialists.  There are many treatments we can offer to resolve your heel pain once the source is identified.  Get your feet feeling well and start to lose some pounds and keep it away!
