Summer Running: Beat the Heat

In Austin, running is a year round event.   The official start of summer this past week means lots of hot days ahead of us.  While it may feel like triple digits throughout the day, you can continue to run safely if you take the proper steps.   Exposure and dehydration are your two biggest enemies when running in the summer heat. Here are a few things to pay attention to in order to keep safe on your summer runs.

Time of day & length of run.  If you are going for a long run, start early or wait until the sun goes down.  The daytime temperature and the unhindered rays of the sun can do a lot to wear you down.  Running while the sun is high should be limited to short distances or covered trails. Your body temperature can reach dangerous levels with too much exposure to the sun and heat.
