How do I know if my ankle is sprained?

If you twisted or rolled your foot, check these ankle sprain symptoms to see if you have serious damage. Start with the pain. Did it start right after the injury? How bad is it? If the ankle starts to swell right away, you may have sprained it. If so, your body will rush blood to the area, which will likely cause it to turn red and feel a bit warm. Touch the outside (or inside) of your ankle to see if there is tenderness when you press on certain areas.

If the pain is very severe—enough that you can’t bear any weight on it—or if there is much swelling, you need to have it seen right away. Numbness in your foot or toes is an even more worrying sign. Keep weight off, elevate your foot, and come to our office as soon as you can. We can take X-rays to see if any bones are broken, locate any serious nerve damage, and determine how bad the sprain is.
