While conservative treatments are always the preferred route to solving foot and ankle problems, there are times when surgery is required for a more effective or permanent solution. The doctors at Austin Foot & Ankle Specialists have advanced training and extensive experience in a multitude of surgical procedures, ranging from reconstructive surgeries (e.g. bunions, hammertoes, and flat feet), joint replacement, ankle arthroscopy, and nerve decompression. Complications arising from errors made by other surgeons may also be repairable.
A fungal toenail infection is often terribly stubborn to clear out. Topical treatments may have trouble penetrating to the core of the infection, while oral treatments are not recommendable to everyone due to potential side effects. That’s where laser treatment comes in.
The HyperBlue 1530 laser we use at our office sends intense, concentrated light through an infected nail to eradicate the fungus at the source, destroying the infection while leaving surrounding, uninfected tissue unharmed. Laser treatment is safe, fast, and virtually painless, with few known side effects and no recovery time needed. After several treatments, many patients begin to see clear, new nails growing in to replace those damaged by the infection.
Lasers are not just effective at threating toenail fungus. Multiwave Locked System (MLS) Laser Therapy is focused on treating pain and inflammation caused by soft tissue injuries. Using specific frequencies and pulses of light, an MLS laser is capable of penetrating into an affected muscle, tendon, or ligament to increase blood flow to the area and trigger a higher anti-inflammatory response. Conditions including arthritis, plantar fasciitis, neuromas, and bursitis can all benefit from pain relief and accelerated healing time via this form of treatment.
Some forms of treatment for arthritis and injuries uses the body’s own tools in its favor. At Austin Foot and Ankle Specialists, treatments using stem cells or platelet rich plasma may be considered. In both cases, the required cells are drawn from the body or blood, concentrated, and re-injected into the injured site. This enhances natural repair and promotes healing at the targeted area.
In cases where the alignment of the foot and ankle needs correction or weight needs to be readjusted, custom orthotics and braces are a tried-and-true method of providing necessary comfort and relief. A custom orthotic is specifically molded to the shape of one’s foot or ankle, having a greater effect than pre-made orthotics purchased over the counter. Bracing can be used as part of injury recovery as well as to correct pediatric abnormalities and increase balance for patients who are at a higher fall risk.
