Getting older – A yearly check-up for your feet
As any of us can attest, our bodies change with time. Many of the activities that we participated in during high school and college are no longer easy or part of our regular routine. The yearly check-ups with your family doctor have become common. Here at Austin Foot and Ankle Specialists, we recommend a yearly check up on your feet. You don’t have to wait until it becomes too painful for you to walk comfortably before seeking the help of a podiatrist.
You have been walking on your feet since you were only a year or two old. The pressure that 20, 30, 40 or more years of walking have put on your foot may adversely affect the shape and function of your feet. As any mother can attest, changes to the strength and flexibility of tendons can cause your foot to widen or become larger. Additionally, the specific structure of your foot can lead to hammertoes or bunions. Over time the mechanics and movements of your foot can be structurally altered. When these changes occur, as in bunions and hammertoes, the forces put on your feet as you walk are in the wrong areas. The fat pad under your toes is no longer useful when the tip of your toe touches the ground. The inside of your big toe isn’t meant to rub the ground or your shoe as occurs with bunions. These are just a few conditions that can be avoided or corrected with proper foot care.
Just like the rest of your body, your foot changes as you age. Your foot may become larger or change shape, so it is important to check your shoe size annually. Improper fitting shoes can lead to ingrown nails, corn, calluses, and many other problems that your podiatrist can treat. Don’t wait until that discomfort becomes unbearable. Make an appointment to have a foot check up today.
Until next time, keep those feet happy and healthy, Austin!
