How to Choose the Right Shoes for Summer Sports

The Austin Sports and Social Club has a wide range of sporting activities for adults. One of the great things about this organization is that they host sports all across our greater community. All the various parts of Austin are included, but so too are locations like Round Rock and Pflugerville. So wherever you live, you should be able to find co-ed leagues in your favorite sports!

Whatever your choice in physical activity, it is important that you have the right shoes for summer sports. Footwear plays an essential role in injury prevention and other foot issues, so use these tips to find the right footwear for your summer sports:

  1. Make sure the footwear is activity-appropriate. Far too many people sustain injuries when they attempt to run long distances in basketball shoes or hit the basketball court in running footwear. Athletic shoes are engineered specifically for the sport that is being performed, so be sure to pick the right type.
  2. Make sure your shoes fit correctly. Ideally, toes can wiggle, an index finger can be slid down the back to the second knuckle, and there is a thumb’s width of space between the front of the shoe and the longest toe. The heel should also be cradled properly.
  3. Pick footwear constructed by breathable materials. It’s no big secret that summer gets hot down here in Texas, and this can go double for feet protected by socks and shoes! Wearing footwear made from materials like leather or nylon mesh will help to keep your feet cooler. This is important for reducing your risk of fungal or bacterial infections.

Choosing the right shoes for your summer sports will help reduce your risk of suffering a foot or ankle injury while staying active, but it is impossible to completely eliminate that risk.
