There's nothing worse than walking around on aching feet. This is especially true when you want to get outside on a beautiful summer day. A survey conducted by the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA) reported that half of all Americans have foot pain. Unfortunately, the flip flops you are wearing during the summer months may be at the root of some of these problems. Your typical flip flop is a flat sole with a few strips of rubber, or leather thongs, to hole them to your feet. This is not enough to protect and support your feet for long periods of time. All too often this leads to pain and problems after a day of wear.
We here at Austin Foot and Ankle Specialists want you to stay on your feet and keep them feeling good. We also would like you to continue to wear the type of footwear that you choose. Our goal today is to give you the information to make the best decision when purchasing flip flops. Click here for a short video created by the APMA to help guide your selection.
Some highlights of this video include inspecting last year's flip flops before putting them into service again. Make sure they fit and your toes are not in danger of becoming stubbed because they extend over the end of the sole. Flip flops are also known to take a beating, so be sure to discard those that show separation of layers or fraying along the edge as these are worn out. It is important that your flip flops compliment your feet. Make sure your flip flop bends where your toes would as you step and not every which way. If you can twist the sole of your pair of flip flops, they should be discarded. This type of flip flop often is flat and lacks any arch support. Without support to your arch, your feet can become easily strained and painful. The APMA actually offers a list of flip flop designs and manufacturers that meet all of the requirements outlined in the video. The Vasyli flip flop is even available at our office.
Until next time, keep those feet happy and healthy Austin!
