Why does running cause my toenails to become black and fall off?
Black toenails are caused from constant rubbing and microtrauma of the toe hitting against the front of your shoe while running. The black is a stain from small bleeding that occurs below the nail plate and the nail bed. This damaged part of the nail will gradually be pushed out with new nail and is best to be left alone.
