For these reasons, we incorporate the use of Coblation technology (TOPAZ MicroDebrider and ArthroCare Sports Medicine) for treatment of chronic tendon and plantar fascia pathology in the foot and ankle. This most advanced treatment modality is available to treat our patients more effectively. The innovative benefits of Coblation technology have led to its use in various surgical specialties.
The TOPAZ MicroDebrider utilizes Coblation®technology and is considered an alternative to standard invasive surgical procedures. Most radiofrequency-based surgical products (i.e. lasers and electrosurgical devices) use heat-driven processes to remove or cut tissue, which can damage the tissue structure. In contrast, Coblation-based devices operate at low temperatures, allowing it to gently dissolve abnormal tissue, minimizing damage to surrounding healthy tissue. This allows for preservation of the normal anatomical structure of the tendon and fascia.
TOPAZ is a minimally invasive technique, requiring only a small incision for treatment purposes. The TOPAZ technique has been associated with quick return to daily activities allowing for significant improvement in patient outcomes. The procedure is typically administered in combination with local and/or light sedative anesthesia.
